Essay 1960

How was the context of the 1960's shown in the different representations used in episode 1?

In the 1960's there was a massive gender divide, meaning that women stereotypically were stay at home mums and cleaned and cooked whereas, men went and worked and made the money for the family. If a women had a job it wouldn't be ver high up and would be very basic with low pay because females were seen as not as good at working as men. In the episode Mr Steed and Mrs Peel were depicted having a fencing fight and he hits her on the bum. This wouldn't be allowed nowadays as it is sexual assault and back then it wasn't as highly concerned.

Furthermore there was a massive class divide, not the main classes; Lower, Middle and Upper.
These classes then caused a hierarchy that led to mass poverty and soon enough a lot of suicide. What you wore, how you looked, how you spoke and who you were seen with told society what kind class you were in. In the first episode, Emma and John are represented as upper class citizens as they both wear 'expensive' clothing, speak in a formal manor and acted very 'maturely'. Later when they go to the bar they look down on the bar keeper as he is a middle class working citizen and people like John and Emma would've disregarded them.
